Bank & FPT Weighting in VN30 and VN Diamond Baskets: Anchor or Concentration Risk? Vietnam ETF Flow Analysis, October 2026

Executive Summary

FPT and four banks hold 44.8% of the VN30 ETF basket and 41.9% of VN Diamond. We test anchor versus concentration risk with 27/10/2026 flow and VWAP data.

Vietnam's ETF complex closed the 27 October 2026 session with 23.01 trillion VND in total AUM across 24 HOSE-listed funds, and roughly four-fifths of that capital sits in baskets where FPT and a small group of commercial banks occupy the top of the weight table. With the market not yet open on 28 October, the VN-Index stands at 1,761.87 points (-0.10%) and the VN30-Index at 1,888.40 points (-0.06%) on the prior close — a flat tape that conceals an unusually wide 2026 performance gap between VN30-track and VN Diamond-track products. This analysis quantifies where the concentration actually sits, how secondary-market foreign flow is positioning around it, and whether the anchor names are stabilisers or the dominant source of tracking dispersion.

Key Takeaways

  • FPT (12.4%) plus the four largest bank constituents TCB (9.2%), ACB (8.6%), VPB (7.5%) and MBB (7.1%) account for 44.8% of the VN30 basket; the equivalent FPT-plus-bank block is 41.9% of the VN Diamond basket and 66.9% of the pure five-bank VNFinLead basket.
  • Concentration has been expensive in 2026: VN Diamond-track ETFs are down 14.60% to 15.80% YTD versus a 5.14% to 5.79% decline for VN30-track peers — a dispersion of roughly 10 percentage points.
  • Foreign investors net bought +5.70B VND of FUEVFVND on 27/10 and +23.01B VND over five sessions, while E1VFVN30 recorded -0.59B VND and -14.24B VND respectively, according to HOSE / VCI order-book data on etf.com.vn.

The Concentration Arithmetic: 44.8% and 41.9%

VN30: 44.8% of the Basket in Five Lines

The VN30 basket underlying E1VFVN30, FUESSV30, FUEKIV30 and FUEMAV30 is more concentrated than its 30-stock label implies. The top seven weights — FPT (12.4%), TCB (9.2%), ACB (8.6%), HPG (8.4%), VPB (7.5%), MBB (7.1%) and MWG (6.2%) — sum to 59.4% of the benchmark. Within that block, banks (TCB, ACB, VPB, MBB) represent 32.4% and FPT alone 12.4%, for a combined 44.8%. Only HPG (8.4%) and MWG (6.2%) provide meaningful non-financial offset among the disclosed leaders; the residual ~40.6% is spread across 23 smaller lines that individually carry limited index gravity.

The practical implication is mechanical: a 10% move in FPT transmits approximately 1.24 percentage points to the VN30 basket before any second-order correlation effects, while a 5% sector-wide bank move transmits roughly 1.62pp. In a session where the VN30-Index moved just -0.06% on 27 October, that leverage is dormant — but it dominates the tails.

VN Diamond: FPT at 15.1%, Banks at 26.8%

The VN Diamond basket used by FUEVFVND, FUEMAVND and FUEKIVND is structurally even more top-heavy. FPT carries 15.1%, followed by PNJ (12.8%), MWG (12.4%), GMD (10.6%), ACB (9.8%), TCB (9.1%), MBB (7.9%) and REE (6.8%). The top eight names alone total 84.5% of the basket, leaving just ~15.5% for the entire tail — versus ~40.6% tail capacity in the VN30 basket.

Two distinct risk blocks therefore coexist inside Diamond: the FPT-plus-bank anchor at 41.9%, and a 42.6% consumer/retail/infrastructure block (PNJ, MWG, GMD, REE). The latter is precisely the exposure that has driven the 2026 underperformance, and it is the reason the Diamond complex behaves less like a large-cap core and more like a high-conviction factor book.

Flow Evidence: The Diamond Complex Is Absorbing Foreign Money

Secondary-Market Foreign Net vs Primary Creation Activity

Market-wide, HOSE-listed ETFs recorded foreign buys of 8.22B VND against sells of 3.19B VND on 27 October, a net +5.03B VND, according to HOSE / VCI order-book data on etf.com.vn. That headline is almost entirely a single-product story: FUEVFVND alone printed +5.70B VND of net foreign buying, meaning every other fund in the complex was net negative in aggregate for the session. Over five sessions the divergence widens further — FUEVFVND +23.01B VND against E1VFVN30 -14.24B VND, with FUEVN100 (+2.23B VND) the only other material positive.

This is critical to interpret correctly. These figures measure secondary-market net trading value on HOSE — order-book crossings between foreign and domestic accounts — and are not the same as primary-market ETF creation or redemption flows. A persistent five-day pattern of this size is nonetheless a strong tell: foreign capital is adding exposure to the cheaper, more beaten-up Diamond basket while trimming the VN30 core. Any claim of primary creation demand requires the fund's own creation/redemption disclosures, not order-book data.

VWAP Premium and Discount: Intraday Execution Skew

Execution quality diverged in line with that flow. E1VFVN30 closed at 34,000 VND against an intraday VWAP of 33,907 VND, a +0.27% premium to the session's volume-weighted price — buyers were active into the close. FUESSV30 (+0.86% vs VWAP) and FUEMAV30 (+0.70% vs VWAP) showed the same pattern, and FUEKIV30 closed +0.44% above its 12,934 VND VWAP. The Diamond and financial baskets inverted: FUEVFVND closed at 32,280 VND versus a 32,362 VND VWAP (-0.25%), FUESSVFL closed at 28,200 VND versus 28,319 VND (-0.42%), and FUEVN100 closed -0.63% below its 24,655 VND VWAP. Selling pressure, likely block-related, crystallised at the close in those products even as foreign accounts recorded net buying.

Anchor or Concentration Risk? The 2026 Verdict

Dispersion Is the Price of Tail Narrowness

The evidence favours the concentration-risk reading for 2026. FUEVFVND is down 15.72% YTD, FUEKIVND -15.80% and FUEMAVND -14.60%, against -5.79% for E1VFVN30, -5.73% for FUEKIV30, -5.34% for FUEMAV30 and -5.14% for FUESSV30. The ~10pp dispersion maps directly onto basket construction: Diamond's 42.6% non-FPT, non-bank block (PNJ, MWG, GMD, REE) plus a 15.1% FPT weight produced a materially higher-beta outcome than the VN30 basket's more balanced 44.8% anchor with 8.4% HPG ballast. FUEVFVND's -0.98% on 27 October versus the VN-Index's -0.10% is the same asymmetry in miniature, on 114,300 units of turnover.

VNFinLead Is the Purest Single-Factor Bet — and the Thinnest

FUESSVFL concentrates 66.9% in five banks (TCB 14.8%, ACB 14.2%, MBB 13.6%, VPB 12.9%, STB 11.4%) plus SSI at 7.8%, for 74.7% in six financial lines. It is the cleanest expression of the bank anchor thesis, and its -6.06% YTD sits between the VN30 products and the Diamond complex — but it is also the least liquid instrument of the group, with 3,300 units traded on 27 October and 598B VND in AUM. FUEKIVFS, the alternative financials wrapper at 166B VND, printed just 100 units and closed +2.47% at 16,610 VND, a move best treated as a liquidity artefact rather than a signal.

Positioning Playbook for Q4 2026

Where the AUM Actually Sits

Three funds — FUEVFVND (10,455B VND, 45.4% of the 23.01T VND total), E1VFVN30 (5,879B VND, 25.5%) and FUEKIV30 (2,298B VND, 10.0%) — hold 81.0% of industry AUM. Because two of the three are effectively VN30 exposures and the third is a Diamond exposure, a single de-rating in FPT propagates across four-fifths of the Vietnamese ETF asset base simultaneously. That is the systemic dimension of this concentration story, and it is not diversifiable by switching between the flagship products.

Total HOSE ETF turnover on 27 October was only 10.36B VND across 24 funds, with 6 advancers, 10 decliners and 8 unchanged. E1VFVN30 (142,400 units) and FUEVFVND (114,300 units) captured the overwhelming share; FUEDCMID was the day's outlier at +1.72% on 1,600 units and a +2.40% premium to its 11,524 VND VWAP, while FUEIP100 jumped +6.87% on 200 units. Offshore wrappers were firmer on a five-day view — VanEck Vietnam ETF at $16.98 (-0.03% on the day, +2.57% over five sessions, -11.12% YTD) and Xtrackers FTSE Vietnam at £29.33 (+0.53%, +4.38% over five sessions, -5.68% YTD) — although their benchmark methodology differs from the HOSE baskets.

Practical Allocation Logic

For institutional allocators, the defensible construction is a core-satellite barbell rather than a single flagship holding. E1VFVN30, at 5,879B VND and with the tightest close-to-VWAP behaviour among large products (+0.27%), remains the liquidity anchor. FUEVFVND is now a deliberate value/mean-reversion overlay: the +23.01B VND five-day foreign net inflow against a -15.72% YTD drawdown is precisely the configuration in which overweighting is compensated, but the 42.6% consumer/retail block must be sized as an active risk, not a passive one. FUESSVFL offers the cleanest bank beta but should be entered with explicit liquidity limits given 3,300-unit daily volumes. Frequently Asked Questions

1. What percentage of the VN30 ETF basket is FPT and banks?
FPT is 12.4% and the four largest banks — TCB 9.2%, ACB 8.6%, VPB 7.5% and MBB 7.1% — total 32.4%, for 44.8% combined. A 10% move in FPT therefore transmits roughly 1.24 percentage points to the basket before correlation effects, and a 5% broad bank move roughly 1.62pp.

2. Why did FUEVFVND show +5.70B VND of foreign net buying while E1VFVN30 showed -0.59B VND?
That is secondary-market order-book net trading value on HOSE for the 27 October session, per HOSE / VCI data on etf.com.vn — not primary creation or redemption. Over five sessions the gap widens to +23.01B VND for FUEVFVND versus -14.24B VND for E1VFVN30, against a market-wide net of +5.03B VND (buys 8.22B, sells 3.19B).

3. Is VN Diamond concentration riskier than VN30 exposure?
On the disclosed data, yes. The Diamond top eight holdings total 84.5% of the basket with only ~15.5% in the tail, versus 59.4% and ~40.6% for VN30. That narrowness produced a 2026 YTD dispersion of roughly 10pp: FUEVFVND -15.72%, FUEKIVND -15.80% and FUEMAVND -14.60% against -5.79%, -5.73%, -5.34% and -5.14% for the four VN30-track ETFs.
