The 21 October 2026 session delivered one of the strongest single-day rebounds of the month: the VN-INDEX closed at 1,738.67 points (+2.76%) after trading between 1,695.95 and 1,738.91, while the VN30-INDEX finished at 1,880.57 points (+1.90%). Across the 24 ETFs listed on HOSE, 14 advanced, 3 declined and 7 closed unchanged, on total turnover of 30.28 billion VND and aggregate AUM of 23.08 trillion VND. Yet underneath that broad tape, the two flagship index strategies — VN30 and VN Diamond — are telling two very different stories about where money is actually going. Below we so sánh ETF VN30 và VN Diamond trên bốn tiêu chí thực sự quyết định việc phân bổ: quy mô tài sản, thanh khoản, dòng vốn ngoại và lợi nhuận. All prices below are the 21 October closing prices; the 22 October session has not yet opened.

Key Takeaways

  • Flows split decisively along strategy lines. FUEVFVND (VN Diamond) attracted +7.20 billion VND of foreign net buying while E1VFVN30 (VN30) bled -12.37 billion VND, against a whole-market ETF foreign net outflow of -4.29 billion VND (buy 25.00 billion, sell 29.29 billion).
  • Diamond is now the bigger, more liquid vehicle. FUEVFVND's AUM of 10,594 billion VND is 1.82x E1VFVN30's 5,826 billion VND, and the two funds together account for roughly 90.9% of all HOSE ETF turnover in the session (calculated from volume × VWAP).
  • Flows and returns are diverging. Diamond has drawn capital despite a -14.39% YTD return versus -7.79% for E1VFVN30 — a gap driven by Diamond's heavier concentration in FPT (15.1%), PNJ (12.8%), MWG (12.4%) and GMD (10.6%).
  • Bottom line. Khi so sánh ETF VN30 và VN Diamond, điểm đánh đổi hiện ra rất rõ: Diamond thắng về dòng vốn ngoại và thanh khoản, VN30 thắng về mức lỗ YTD và độ phân tán rổ.

Session Anatomy: A Broad Rally, But Only Two Funds Moved the Needle

On paper, the 21 October rally looked like a tide that lifted every ETF boat. But turnover concentration was extreme. Multiplying reported volume by VWAP gives roughly 11.71 billion VND traded in E1VFVN30 and 15.81 billion VND in FUEVFVND — about 38.7% and 52.2% of the entire 30.28 billion VND HOSE ETF turnover respectively. Every other fund in the market shared the remaining ~9%, roughly 2.76 billion VND, across 22 products.

Price versus VWAP tells you who was bidding late

The most useful intraday signal is the gap between the closing price and the day's VWAP. E1VFVN30 closed at 33,850 VND, or 0.99% above its VWAP of 33,518 VND, with 349,400 fund units changing hands — evidence of demand building into the close. FUEVFVND closed at 32,790 VND against a VWAP of 32,806 VND, i.e. 0.05% below its own average price: buyers got no late premium, and the fund finished fractionally under the session's volume-weighted cost basis. In other words, the Diamond fund won on volume and foreign flow, while the VN30 fund won on end-of-day price pressure.

Contrast that with the small-cap-liquidity tail. FUESSV30 rose 1.96% on just 15,300 units (AUM 256 billion VND), closing 1.92% above VWAP; FUEIP100 printed -4.35% on 300 units and FUESSV50 gained 5.11% on 1,900 units. At those volumes, a single order sets the print — a distinction we return to in the tracking-error section below.

Basket Construction: Diversified Banks vs Concentrated Compounders

The two strategies are not two versions of the same bet. The VN30 basket spreads its top weights across the banking and industrial complex: FPT 12.4%, TCB 9.2%, ACB 8.6%, HPG 8.4%, VPB 7.5%, MBB 7.1%, MWG 6.2%. It is a 30-stock, large-cap, sector-balanced proxy for the VN30-INDEX — the same index that rose 1.90% on the day — and its largest single position is only marginally above one tenth of the fund.

The VN Diamond basket is a different animal altogether. FPT 15.1%, PNJ 12.8%, MWG 12.4% and GMD 10.6% together make up 50.9% of the fund: a portfolio of consumer, retail and logistics compounders rather than a cross-section of the banking system. That is the mechanical explanation for the YTD gap. When four names carry half the fund, the fund's return is a referendum on those four names — not on the index, and not on the market's breadth. It also explains why capital can keep flowing in even as the YTD number sits at -14.39%: investors buying Diamond today are expressing a view on FPT, PNJ, MWG and GMD, not on the VN30-INDEX.

Nhà đầu tư đang trả giá cho sự tập trung bằng một mức drawdown sâu hơn — và vẫn chấp nhận, vì dòng tiền ngoại trong phiên chảy vào Diamond chứ không phải VN30.

Tracking Error: What the Thin-Volume Tail Actually Tells You

Tracking error is where liquidity stops being an abstract concept. For E1VFVN30 and FUEVFVND, the realised gap between trade price and NAV is measured in basis points: hundreds of thousands of units trade through the book each session, so a market order absorbs the spread and little else. For the tail of the market the arithmetic flips. A 4.35% move on 300 units (FUEIP100) or a 5.11% move on 1,900 units (FUESSV50) is not a repricing of the underlying basket — it is one order clearing a thin book. Published tracking error can look immaculate while realised execution cost is several percentage points. That is the practical case for concentrating ETF exposure in the two funds that carry 90.9% of turnover, whatever the YTD number says.
