So sánh ETF VN30 và VN Diamond: Strategy Comparison and Tracking Error Risk as Foreign Flows Return

Two of Vietnam's best-known onshore ETFs are telling very different stories in September 2026. According to Yahoo Finance data as of 23/09/2026, E1VFVN30 (VFMVN30 ETF) was priced at 35,180 VND, down 1.72% for the session, while FUEVFVND (DCVFMVN Diamond ETF) stood at 34,030 VND, up 0.38% — a 2.10 percentage point gap in a single session. Year to date the same two funds are separated by 7.82 percentage points (-3.33% versus -11.15%), which is why any serious so sánh ETF VN30 và VN Diamond exercise quickly becomes a discussion about index design, tracking error and liquidity rather than about market direction.

Data note: at the time of the data pull on 23/09/2026 the market had not yet opened, so every price quoted below is the prior session's closing price.

A useful so sánh ETF VN30 và VN Diamond therefore has to answer three separate questions: what the two indices select, how closely each fund replicates its index, and how easily an investor can actually get in and out. This article takes them in that order.

The one-session and one-week picture

The single-session divergence is the most striking line in the dataset. E1VFVN30 fell 1.72% while FUEVFVND rose 0.38%, a 2.10 percentage point spread inside one session. Over one week that gap almost disappears: E1VFVN30 is +0.26% and FUEVFVND is +0.38%, a difference of just 0.12 percentage points. Notably, FUEVFVND's one-day and one-week figures are identical in the dataset (+0.38% in both columns), which means the entire weekly move captured here was recorded in the most recent session. Anyone running a so sánh ETF VN30 và VN Diamond on a one-week window would therefore conclude — incorrectly — that the two funds behave almost identically.

The one-month and year-to-date picture

Over a month the relationship reverses in favour of the VN30 fund: E1VFVN30 is +0.11% and FUEVFVND is -1.45%, a 1.56 percentage point gap. Year to date the gap is the widest of any window shown — 7.82 percentage points, with E1VFVN30 at -3.33% and FUEVFVND at -11.15%. The lesson from the dataset is that the two products do not simply track the same market at different speeds; their return paths have genuinely different shapes depending on the window you look at, and any so sánh ETF VN30 và VN Diamond that quotes a single window is quoting a coincidence.

So sánh ETF VN30 và VN Diamond: how the two indices are built

Both funds give investors exposure to Vietnamese large-cap equities listed on HOSE, but the selection logic behind their underlying indices is not the same. That difference — not market timing — is the first thing a so sánh ETF VN30 và VN Diamond should isolate, because it explains most of the return divergence in Table 1.

VN30 — broad large-cap exposure with weight caps

The VN30 index family selects 30 of the largest and most liquid companies on HOSE and applies weighting caps so that no single constituent dominates the basket. The result is a concentrated but diversified large-cap portfolio whose return is driven mainly by the largest banks, real estate developers and consumer names. Because the caps are applied to a broad 30-stock universe, the index behaves like a general proxy for large-cap Vietnam. The exact mechanics are set out in our breakdown of quy tắc giới hạn tỷ trọng của chỉ số VN30.

VN Diamond — foreign ownership room as the filter

FUEVFVND tracks the VN Diamond index, which uses a fundamentally different screen: it targets companies whose foreign ownership room has effectively been exhausted — names that foreign investors cannot buy freely on the open market. The index caps individual stock weights and requires a minimum number of constituents so it does not collapse into a handful of tickers. The practical consequence is that VN Diamond concentrates in banks and a small set of consumer or industrial names where foreign room is full, producing a very different sector mix from VN30. The construction rules are covered in detail in VN Diamond và giới hạn sở hữu nước ngoài.

Tracking error: where a so sánh ETF VN30 và VN Diamond gets harder

Tracking error is the standard deviation of the gap between a fund's return and its index return. It is the second pillar of any so sánh ETF VN30 và VN Diamond, because the two funds do not face the same replication constraints.

For a VN30-tracking fund the universe is liquid and broad, so cash drag, dividend timing and rebalancing costs are the main sources of drift. For a VN Diamond-tracking fund the constraints are structural: the underlying stocks are, by definition, at or near their foreign ownership limit, so the fund has less flexibility to create and redeem units in size without moving the market. All else equal, that tends to produce a wider expected tracking error.

Two caveats matter. First, tracking error is measured over time, not from a single session — the 2.10 percentage point one-day gap in Table 1 is a return divergence, not tracking error. Second, the 7.82 percentage point YTD gap reflects index composition differences as much as replication quality. The methodology behind both numbers is explained in our guide to đo lường tracking error của ETF Việt Nam.

Why the divergence is not a performance verdict

The VN30 fund is ahead year to date, but that does not make it the better product — it makes it the better performer in one particular index regime. If foreign flows return and the foreign-room premium reasserts itself, the same structural difference would widen the gap in the other direction. A so sánh ETF VN30 và VN Diamond framed as a scoreboard is therefore a fragile conclusion; framed as an exposure decision, it is durable.

Liquidity, spreads and foreign flows

Volume is the third pillar of a so sánh ETF VN30 và VN Diamond. E1VFVN30 traded 393K units in the session captured, while FUEVFVND traded 127K units. Among the SSIAM products FUESSVFL stands out at 2,525K units, whereas FUESSV50 and FUEKIVFS both show 0K — a reminder that onshore ETF liquidity is uneven, and that a thin line can be difficult to trade at the quoted price. Bid-ask spreads widen accordingly. Our hướng dẫn về thanh khoản và chênh lệch giá ETF explains how to measure that cost before committing size.

Foreign flows sit behind the VN Diamond logic. When foreign investors return to Vietnamese equities, the stocks in FUEVFVND's basket are precisely the ones they often cannot buy directly, which is the premium the index is designed to capture. That mechanism also makes the fund sensitive to any change in foreign-room rules — see dòng vốn ngoại trên HOSE năm 2026 for the flow context. Note that VNM (VanEck Vietnam ETF), at $17.34 and -9.26% YTD, is included here only as an offshore reference point and is not directly comparable in structure to the two onshore funds.

How to run a so sánh ETF VN30 và VN Diamond in portfolio construction

A four-step checklist turns the data above into a decision:

  • Define the exposure you want. Broad large-cap beta points to a VN30 tracker; a deliberate foreign-room premium points to VN Diamond.
  • Check the replication history, not one session. Compare multi-month NAV-versus-index gaps rather than the one-day divergence in Table 1.
  • Size the order against volume. 393K versus 127K units is a real difference in executable size at the touch.
  • Decide on overlap. Both funds draw on HOSE large caps, so holding both does not diversify away index design risk — it blends it.

FAQ: so sánh ETF VN30 và VN Diamond

Is E1VFVN30 or FUEVFVND the better buy right now?

The data in Table 1 cannot answer that. E1VFVN30 is ahead year to date at -3.33% versus -11.15%, but a so sánh ETF VN30 và VN Diamond only tells you that the two funds are exposed to different index rules and different sector weights. Which one suits you depends on whether you want broad large-cap beta or a targeted foreign-room exposure.

Which of the two has lower tracking error?

Typically the VN30 tracker, because its constituents are liquid and freely tradable, leaving less room for replication slippage. A so sánh ETF VN30 và VN Diamond on this point should always compare multi-year rolling tracking error rather than short windows.

Which fund is more liquid?

On the session captured, E1VFVN30 traded 393K units against FUEVFVND's 127K units, so the VN30 fund was the easier line to trade in size. That advantage can flip as flows rotate, which is why liquidity deserves its own column in any so sánh ETF VN30 và VN Diamond.

Conclusion

The 2.10 percentage point one-session gap and the 7.82 percentage point year-to-date gap are the headline facts of this so sánh ETF VN30 và VN Diamond, but the useful takeaway is structural: VN30 offers broad large-cap beta with weight caps, while VN Diamond offers targeted exposure to stocks foreign investors cannot easily buy.

Different index rules produce different return paths, different expected tracking error and different liquidity. A so sánh ETF VN30 và VN Diamond that stops at the price table is only doing a third of the job.
